EDUCATIONAL SETTINGS
A.
Journal Club
A
weekly journal club will be mandatory to stay current with the Podiatric/Orthopedic
literature as it pertains to the foot and leg. The resident will
choose a topic of interest and present it with a critical evaluation
of the
literature. The Journal Club will incorporate the present courseware TM Online
Lecture Program as well as inclusion of an Evidence Based Medicine
approach to the current medical and surgical literature. The
session will take place at Botsford General Hospital and out-of-house
residents
will
be encouraged
to attend.
B. Anatomy
Dissection Lab
Regularly
scheduled dissection labs will be mandatory. Surgical anatomy, incision
planning and three dimensional relations will be discussed early
in the year. As the program progresses, attention will be directed
to all areas of the forefoot, rearfoot and ankle. Osteotomy training
will
also be performed on saw bones. A-O fixation techniques will be explained
and performed to the resident. Additionally, academic sessions are
held with the Botsford Staff Anatomist reviewing Lower Extremity
anatomy via lecture and Cadaver Dissection Laboratory.
C.
Lecturing / Clinical Pathology Conference
Each quarter,
the resident will be required to address the podiatry staff on a relevant
topic. The resident will be able to use the hospital facilities for
preparation of power-point presentations, handouts and other audiovisuals
necessary for the lecture.
D. Medical
Records
The
resident will receive instruction in proper protocols and format
for maintenance
of medical records both for the ambulatory and in-house patient. Included
in the instruction will be how to use pertinent information when performing
histories and physicals, progress notes, operative reports, discharge
summaries and consultations.
E. Risk
Management Conferences
The
resident will be given several lectures on podiatric risk management
including the law of medical malpractice and informed consent. Issues
such as asset projection, incorporation, wills and trusts will be discussed.
The residents may be given an opportunity to observe Worker's Compensation
and Medical Malpractice depositions.

The
Botsford Library & Internet Services
department offers a full range of print and electronic resources and services.
G.
Podiatry Clinic at Botsford General Hospital
Podiatric residents will participate in a Resident-Driven, attending
supervised Office-Based Clinic. Pathology seen at this full working clinic
include Diabetic Wound Care, Palliative Care, Biomechanics, and Pediatrics.
Significant surgical cases are generated from clinic patients.
H.
Mission associated with the Baja Project for crippled children.
Residents may participate in the clinical and surgical treatment
of Pediatric Clubfoot and related deformities. Educational
