Typical
Rotations of the Comprehensive PM&S 36 Program
A. Anesthesia
The podiatry
resident is assigned to an anesthesiologist and is exposed to the indications,
pharmacology, anatomy, physiological effects and techniques involved in
the administration of general, regional and local anesthesia. Daily tasks
include incubation, resuscitation, administration of local and general
anesthesia, establish IV routes, preoperative, perioperative and postoperative
assessment of patient's health status. The Podiatric resident will also
rotate with the Anesthesiologist in the Pain Management Clinic.
B. Emergency
Medicine and Traumatology
This rotation
provides the resident with an appreciation of the emergency room procedures.
The resident will become competent with regards to acute injury, acute
illness, drug overdose, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, airway management,
insertion of IV's catheters, nasogastric tube insertion, gastric lavage
and orthopedic/podiatric lower extremity trauma.
C Radiology
The resident
will become competent in podiatric radiographic techniques including stress
radiographs, arthrography, tenography, MRI and CT Scan. The resident will
review non-podiatric studies encompassing chest films, arteriograms arthrograms,
venograms and nuclear scan. A special two-week rotation will be provided
in MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING. Advanced Radiographic Imaging (MRI, CT,
Nuclear Scan) Teaching file has been created as an ongoing educational
benefit to the residents.
D. Rheumatology
and Internal Medicine
These rotations
permit the resident to become familiar with the diagnosis and treatment
of patients with rheumatologic diseases as well as general medical conditions.
Participation in EKG reading and performance will be included. The resident
will accompany the rheumatologist and internist at Botsford General Hospital
and be permitted to examine, perform physical examinations and contribute
to the diagnosis and treatment of these patients.
E. Clinical
Pathology
The
resident will be given the opportunity to review and identify soft tissue
and
bony pathology, both grossly and with a pathologist.
The resident will assist in autopsies, microscopic techniques and analysis.
Didactic sessions will be offered by the pathologist which the resident
will attend. Clinical Pathology/Podiatric Case Presentations will be
