| Graduate Medical Education| Resident Programs | Medical Students IV. Content The following general objectives represent levels of achievement in concepts, skills and attitudes for residents in the training of Osteopathic emergency medicine. A. The emergency medicine resident must be trained in all phases of emergency care. B. In order to initiate proper emergency treatment, the emergency medicine resident should be familiar with the principles of continuity of care. C. The training program will enable the resident to rapidly evaluate, organize and initiate the treatment of the emergency patient. The resident's ability to organize and record histories, physical examinations, diagnostic tests and procedures and subsequently initiate appropriate therapy will be an integral part of the training. D. The resident shall give due regard to expected risks arising from therapy as well as the conditions being treated. E. A portion of the education shall include training in special care units supervised by attending physicians. F. During the training period, the resident must have experience in the care of emergency ambulatory and non-ambulatory patients as well as the traditional urgent, but non-emergent patient. G. Training shall incorporate the application of Osteopathic diagnostic and therapeutic measures as they relate to the total care of the patient with emphasis on the management of patients requiring emergency medical care. H. Appropriate logs shall be maintained by each resident and evaluated by the program director (see section on logs.) I Opportunity shall be provided to the resident to evaluate the results of treatment of patients. J. Elective times shall be provided. K. Opportunity for research in emergency medicine shall be provided. L. There
shall be training in emergency medical services.
