Graduate Medical Education - Resident Programs | Medical Students THIRD YEAR A. Emergency Medicine (7 months) The resident shall rotate for a total of 7 months in the department during the third year, with a progressive increase in the level of responsibility. The resident is expected to take on a more directed role of managing the department. They will also have the added responsibility of providing direction for rotating house staff. Responsibilities Each senior class will select 2 residents who will serve as chief residents. This role will be fulfilled for the entire senior year and will have the following responsibilities:
The residency participates with the statewide campus system through Michigan State University. As a member of the system, a collaborative educational program with 11 other residencies in emergency medicine in Michigan has been established. The Emergency Medicine Postgraduate Academic Consortium (EM_PAC) provides a monthly educational conference (called PRO-EM Days), with nationally recognized speakers, on a variety of core curriculum topics. Special emphasis labs are also provided throughout the course of the year including ultrasound labs, advanced airway, procedures lab, slit lamp lab, ballistics, and HAZMAT labs among others. MSU Statewide Campus System Junior Attending Shifts: During the senior year, all residents will complete 1 monthly shift as a junior attending. These will be completed during the 7 months of emergency medicine rotations for that year. Responsibilities include:
B. Toxicology (1 month) The resident shall rotate for one month on the Toxicology Service at The Detroit Medical Center. C. Emergency Department Administration (1 month) D. Electives (3 months) E. Conference (2 weeks) F. Vacation
