Graduate Medical Education - Resident Programs | Medical Students SECOND YEAR A. Emergency Medicine (6 months) The resident shall rotate for a total of six months in the department during the second year with a progressive increase in the level of responsibility. The resident shall become more independent and take on the challenge of "running the room" and directing rotating housestaff. B. Trauma (1 month) The resident shall rotate for one month at a trauma center approved by the program director. *C. Pediatric ICU (1 month) The resident will rotate one month in the PICU at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. The resident will be under the supervision of the attending staff at William Beaumont Hospital while on the rotation. D. Orthopedics (1 month) The emphasis should be on the management of acute orthopedic injuries. Minimal time should be spent in the operating room. This may take place either in an emergency department or in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of the Department of Orthopedics. It is anticipated that the resident will take call for the evaluation of acute orthopedic injuries presenting to the Emergency Department. E. Neurology/Neurosurgery (1 month) The resident shall rotate for 1 month with the Department of Neurology at Botsford General Hospital. F. ENT (2 weeks) The resident shall spend two weeks on an ENT service. This rotation will take place with any of the ENT groups at Botsford General Hospital. G. Ophthalmology (2 weeks) The resident shall spend two weeks on an Ophthalmology service. This rotation will take place with any of the Ophthalmologists associated with Botsford General Hospital. H. Conference (2 weeks) The resident shall have two weeks set aside for attending a conference. Time not spent in conference shall be used for researching and preparing the annual resident's paper. The conference shall be emergency medicine related and have prior approval of the Residency Program Director. I. Vacation (2 weeks) The resident
shall have two weeks vacation during the second year of training.
