Graduate Medical Education - Resident Programs | Medical Students FIRST YEAR A. Emergency Medicine (5 months) The resident shall become familiar with the operation of the department. The resident shall, under supervision, assess patients, discuss differential diagnosis and take an active role in determing the treatment program. The resident will be under the supervision of the attending staff of the Department of Emergency Medicine. B. Radiology (2 weeks) The resident should be familiar with all the modalities of diagnostic imaging but the greatest emphasis is still on plain film interpretation. This rotation shall consist of 2 weeks under the supervision of the Department of Radiology at Botsford General Hospital. C. Anesthesia (2 weeks) The resident shall spend two weeks under the supervision of the Department of Anesthesia at BGH. The emphasis shall be on those skills that are particularly important to the emergency physician (intubation, use of neuromuscular blockade and airway management). The resident shall report to the Department of Emergency Medicine attending Physician when the day is completed within the Department of Anesthesia. D. Pediatric Emergency Department (1 month) The resident will rotate through the Pediatric Emergency Department at William Beaumont Hospital. The resident will be under the supervision of the attending staff at William Beaumont Hospital. E. EMS (2 weeks) The resident should actively participate in the EMS system as an emergency medicine resident. During the EMS rotation, the resident shall spend a minimum of 60 hours on an ALS unit. The resident shall receive training in medical control of the EMS system and in radio communications. The education of the resident regarding issues of EMS is an ongoing process throughout the resident's training period. F. Critical Care (2 months) The resident shall rotate for two months in the Intensive Care Unit. Residents will train in the Pulmonary Intensive Care Unit at Henry Ford Hospital for one month and at Botsford General Hospital for one month. G. Conference (2 weeks) The resident shall have two weeks set aside for attending a conference. Time not spent in conference shall be used for researching and preparing the annual resident's paper. The conference shall be emergency medicine related and have prior approval of the Residency Program Director. H. Vacation (2 weeks) The resident shall have available two weeks for vacation during the first year. I. Elective
