Did You Know?: Skin Cancer
Source: American Cancer Society, July 2002

  • Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers. The best way to lower your risk for the disease is to avoid unprotected time in the sun - especially in the middle of the day when the sun’s rays are most intense.
  • How do you know when the sun is the most dangerous? Take the shadow test: If your shadow is shorter than you, the sun’s rays are strongest. Plan activities out of the sun during these times. If you must be outdoors, protect your skin - slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher, and slap on a hat.
  • Are tanning beds a safe alternative to the sun? Not at all! Tanning beds release dangerously high levels of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which can cause premature aging of the skin and increase risk for skin cancer. Keep your skin healthy by avoiding unprotected sun exposure and indoor tanning.
  • Summer means more outdoor activities for you and your family. Protect your skin and theirs with basic sun safety: Slip!Slop!Slap!® Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher, and slap on a hat. And remember to protect your eyes with sunglasses.
  • Heading out on a family vacation? Don’t leave your healthy habits at home. Bring along some healthy snacks - like fruit, raisins or pretzels - for the trip. Pack your hat, sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher, and sunglasses. And plan fun activities that will keep you moving, such as hiking, swimming, or tennis.
  • What should you do if a coworker is diagnosed with cancer? Take your cues from him or her; ask your coworker what he or she feels able to handle. And most importantly, offer support and encouragement and maintain confidentiality when appropriate.
