2. Second Year

A. The second year shall consist of operative rotations through the Scrub services at Botsford General Hospital. The training will be programmed in a progressive manner so as to provide more opportunity for performing surgery as the training progresses.

The steps in this training will be stipulated, but again, there will be variability depending upon the aptitude of the trainee.

The resident should be opening and closing most incisions. He will be allowed to perform most minor surgical procedures of lesser difficulty, e.g., inguinal herniorrhaphies, appendectomies, etc.

B. Out Rotations

The surgical resident will be permitted to take two to three out rotations during his four-year residency program. Out rotations are rotations at other institutions, or rotations through other departments at Botsford General Hospital. All out rotations are to be taken the second and third years of the residency program unless otherwise approved by the Program Director. No out rotations will be permitted in the first year.

All out rotations must be submitted to the Program Director for approval at least two months prior to the starting date of the rotation.

The resident should present the following information when requesting approval of an out rotation:

1. The name of the institution or department.

2. The individual trainer who will be responsible for supervising the resident during their rotation.

3. A general description of the rotation.

4. The starting and finishing dates of the rotation.
