Graduate Medical Education - Resident Programs | Medical Students

J. Infectious Disease

The objective of this rotation is to provide the resident with a thorough understanding of antibiotics, their bacterial spectrums, dosages, toxicities and complications. The resident will perform and read gram-stains; recognize, diagnose and treat local skin infections and abscesses; recogize and treat wet gangrene, septicemia; diagnose etiologies of fever; treat foot infections; recognize and treat postoperative infections.

K. Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and Athletic Conditioning.

The resident will be given the opportunity to rotate at Botsford General Hospital's Total Rehabilitation and Athletic Conditioning Center (TRACC). They will perform exercise therapy, both passive and active on post-surgical and post-traumatic patients. They will learn how to instruct patients with regards to gait training with crutches, walkers and canes. The resident will become familiar with hydrotherapy, electrostimulation, paraffin baths, ultrasound modalities and isokinetic testing. In addition, a rotation in Rehabilitative Medicine will expose the resident to a medical approach to patients with musculoskeletal and neurological pain problems.

L. Dermatology

This rotation affords the resident to become familiar with the diagnosis and treatment of patients with skin disorders. A review of benign and malignant lesions of the entire body with specific emphasis to lower extremity lesions will be covered.

The resident will accompany the dermatologist at the hospital as well as outside centers and be permitted to examine and contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions.

M. Neurology The resident will become proficient in neurological manifestations of disease processes. This rotation will provide a thorough understanding of upper and lower motor neuron disease as well as other neurological disorders. The resident will be allowed to examine patients under the direct supervision of a neurologist and contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions

N. Behavioral Science

Behavioral science rotation will involve the podiatric resident with the staff trainers in participation in a variety of learning experiences with patients of all ages and diagnoses related to the behavioral science to recognize the implications of life changes on health and disease. Behavioral science lectures by staff psychiatrist will augment the ongoing rotation.

O. Veteran Administration Medical Center - Detroit

The podiatric resident rotates through the diabetic, biomechanics and prosthetic clinics. In addition, presurgical clinics and podiatric surgery rotations are scheduled for the residents. The VAMC experience provides the podiatric resident with exposure to variety of podiatric pathology and treatment protocols. In addition, high risk diabetic patients will be evaluated and treated in the Limb Salvage Clinic.
