Graduate Medical Education - Resident Programs | Medical Students

In addition to the core curriculum, residents will be expected to participate in the following seminars to ensure continuity of learning:

1. Behavioral Medicine Conference
2. Family Practice resident meetings and case presentation - weekly
3. General Medicine lectures - weekly
4. Family Service Center (psychiatric and substance abuse outpatient) - to be arranged
5. Journal Club - monthly
6. Family Practice staff meeting - quarterly
7. Osteopathic principles and therapy will be taught through lectures and incorporated into all patient care settings.
8. Book/Board Review - monthly

CURRICULUM DESCRIPTION

FAMILY PRACTICE

A one month rotation will be spent at the office of a board certified family practitioner during the first year. During this time, the resident will become familiar with the running of an office and the necessary essentials for building and maintaining a practice. In addition, residents will rotate three half days per week at Farmington Village (FP) or Primary Care Medicine with the goal of building their own family practice caseload. Residents will have full responsibility for patient management under the supervision of the Clinic Director and attending staff. Call will be no more than every fourth night.

INTERNAL MEDICINE

During the first year, a one month rotation will be spent on both outpatient and inpatient general Internal Medicine services. The emphasis here is to develop skills for the outpatient management of acutely and chronically ill patients including decision-making skills for consultation and referral.

The resident will also be required to choose two (2) four week rotations from the following subspecialties:

1. Pulmonary Medicine - Daily rounds will be made with patient care responsibilities as well as office consults with the attending and follow-ups.
2. Cardiology - One month rotation of in-office and in-hospital training.
3. GI - One month rotation of office and hospital training. All endoscopy is done in the morning. Rounds are made daily with attendings and office consults on particular days.

During the second year, residents will be required to complete rotations in the following subspecialties:

1. Dermatology - A three week rotation with an office-based dermatologist developing skills in diagnosing and treating skin diseases.
2. Endocrinology - A three-four week rotation to develop both office and hospital skills in the area of endocrine disorders.
3. Rheumatology - A four week rotation designed to gain office-based experience in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the musculoskeletal system.

AMBULATORY SURGERY

Botsford's Ambulatory Surgery Center sees over 4,000 cases yearly. Residents are expected to assist in surgical procedures in outpatient, rotating with the general, gynecological or other surgical subspecialties surgeons. Afternoons may be spent rotating in the surgeon's office.
